Tea Hill Country
The high Tea Hill Country of Sri Lanka includes the towns of Nuwara Eliya, Bandarawela, Badulla, Haputale and Ella. It is suggested that you stay in Nuwara Eliya, where the best hotels are. You can travel to the other Tea Hill towns easily from there.

Sri Lanka (Ceylon) was well known for its coffee in the late 1700’s and early 1800’s. However, a disease called ‘Coffee Blight’ virtually wiped out all the coffee on the island in the early 1800’s. James Taylor was the first British tea planter to start a commercial tea estate in 1867. Since then Sri Lanka’s world famous Ceylon Tea has become one of the best quality and most popular teas in the world.

As you travel through the cool, misty climate of Sri Lanka’s Tea Hill country, you will see the beautiful undulating hills of tea with their quaint British styled bungalows and factories. You will also see the plantation workers of southern Indian origin plucking the fresh buds of the tea bushes. The Tea Hill country has some of the world’s most breath-taking mountain views and waterfalls. You can also visit the Hakgalla Botanical Gardens famous for its flowers, visit a tea factory, hike the high-elevation Horton Plains or play a round of golf at the historical Nuwara Eliya Golf Club.
